U=U
You can’t go wrong.
WELCOME
to the "U=U impossibile sbagliare" community!
We are here to announce an important scientific breakthrough about HIV:
a number of studies have shown that people living with HIV, who reach and sustain an
undetectable amount of virus in their blood by taking antiretroviral therapy,
cannot transmit HIV to others,
not even through condomless sex.
U=U means "Undetectable equals Untransmittable".
It means having the same life expectancy as everyone else.
Significa avere la stessa aspettativa di vita di chiunque altro.
It means being able to have children without transmitting the virus to them.
U=U means that the risk of HIV transmission is ZERO..
A HUGE SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH IN THE RESPONSE TO HIV
A SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN AND UNDENIABLE FACT
THE CAMPAIGN
EVEN TODAY, MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE OF THIS REVOLUTIONARY DISCOVERY.
For this reason, the "U=U impossibile sbagliare" (“you can’t go wrong”) campaign was created: we want to provide information and spread this discovery that has truly revolutionized the way we experience HIV infection. Why is it important to spread the U=U message? Because the fear of HIV transmission can have negative consequences on everyone's lives, including:
- Rejecting and marginalizing people living with HIV.
- Giving up on healthy and pleasurable sexual relationships.
- La Lacking information that is evidence-based and up-to-date about HIV prevention.
LET'S SPREAD
KNOWLEDGE
This campaign aims to promote a renewed awareness of scientific findings regarding the transmission of HIV.
We need everyone's help to spread the U=U message in our country (and all over the world!).
We passionately believe in the power of knowledge: if everyone knew about U=U, we could be in a world where people living with HIV are no longer subject to stigma and discrimination because of their serostatus, and where sex and pleasure are for everyone.
Join the "U=U impossibile sbagliare" community, let's spread this message together!

U=U: STORY OF A SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH
U=U / Undetectable = Untransmittable: people living with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load by taking their antiretroviral therapy cannot transmit HIV through condomless sex. This scientific evidence is based on cohort, observational, and mathematical modelling studies, and on samples that include thousands of condomless sex occurrences among serodifferent couples. In all these studies, there has been NO HIV transmission from the partner living with HIV to other. Each scientific study conducted has contributed overwhelming evidence that an undetectable viral load, maintained through effective antiretroviral therapy, prevents HIV transmission.
This was the start of U=U - Undetectable equals Untransmittable -, that can and must have a significant impact in promoting HIV prevention and eliminating stigma associated with HIV.
In fact, as early as 2016, Bruce Richman, an activist for the rights of people living with HIV and publicist based in New York, coined the slogan U=U, to explain in simple words all that scientific evidence had proved beyond any doubt.
IS AN HIV-FREE
WORLD POSSIBLE ?
An HIV-free world is an ambitious but achievable goal, which can be reached using an integrated approach that includes prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and continuous research.
> PREVENTION
Prevention plays a key role in reducing HIV transmission.
It is necessary to promote sex education in schools,,
and access to effective prevention tools such as condoms and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
Awareness-raising campaigns, including by national institutions, and sex education programmes must be implemented, also to eliminate stigma associated with HIV and increase knowledge on transmission routes and prevention methods.
Because U=U, and you can’t go wrong.
> EARLY DIAGNOSIS
Early diagnosis of HIV is essential to start treatment rapidly and reduce the risk of transmission. For this, it is essential to promote voluntary HIV testing and that services are accessible, free, anonymous and non-judgmental. The delivery of rapid testing and the integration of HIV testing into routine health programmes, such as those for sexually transmittable infections, can facilitate early diagnosis and rapid initiation of treatment.
Because of U=U you can’t go wrong.
> TREATMENT
Universal access to antiretroviral therapy is essential for a world that is HIV-free. People living with HIV need to be diagnosed, linked to care services, and to have access to antiretrovirals and support for treatment adherence.
Antiretroviral therapy not only improves the health and quality of life of people living with HIV, but also makes it impossible to transmit the infection.. Let’s include people living with HIV in our relationships, in our daily life, and in our romantic and sexual lives.
As of today, HIV infection, if diagnosed timely, is a chronic infection that can be controlled by effective antiretroviral therapy. Thanks to this, the life expectancy of a person living with HIV is comparable to that of someone who is HIV negative.
RESEARCH
AND INNOVATION
Scientific research continues to play a critical role in getting to an HIV-free world. All efforts must be aimed at developing new drugs for treatment and prevention, vaccines, and a cure.
The goal is to achieve long-term remission or eradication. Prevention strategies need to be improved, novel drug administration routes need to be identified, emerging HIV-related challenges must be addressed, and access to treatment must be ensured in rural or underserved areas.
AN HIV-FREE WORLD
REQUIRES A COLLECTIVE AND GLOBAL EFFORT
involving national governments, international organizations, the scientific community, health workers, community-based organizations
and people living with HIV.
It is essential to address the social, economic and structural barriers that favour HIV transmission and working together to guarantee a healthy, HIV-free life for all.
TOGETHER WE CAN
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
We strongly believe in the power of knowledge. We could get to a world where people living with HIV are no longer subject to stigma and discrimination. Join us in the "U=U impossibile sbagliare" campaign and let's spread this message together!
